How to clip a podcast into short-form videos
Updated · By CLPX · 4 min read
How do you take a clip from a podcast?
To clip a podcast, find a 30–60 second moment that makes sense on its own, cut it so it starts and ends on complete sentences, reframe it to vertical 9:16 on whoever is speaking, add word-by-word captions and a hook that creates curiosity, then post it. By hand, each clip takes roughly 20–40 minutes.
Before you start: rights
Clip only what you own or have permission to use: your own show, a client’s show, or footage a clipping campaign provides. YouTube’s monetization policies exclude content “downloaded or copied from another online source without any substantive modifications,” and uploading someone else’s episode without permission invites copyright claims.
Step by step
- Get the full episode and a transcript. Skimming a transcript is far faster than watching; as one clipping teacher put it, “watching a 10-, 15- or 20-minute video all the way through isn’t possible.”
- Find standalone moments. A good clip makes sense with no context, tells a complete small story with a payoff, and opens on a line that makes people stay: a strong opinion, a surprising number, a confession, a disagreement.
- Cut on complete sentences. Start on the first word of a thought and end when it lands, never mid-word and never before the punchline.
- Remove dead air. Cut every pause and filler that slows the opening.
- Reframe to 9:16. Export at 1080×1920 and keep whoever is talking in frame; with two or more speakers, move the crop to the active speaker.
- Add word-by-word captions, large and high-contrast, clear of the platform’s buttons at the bottom and side of the screen.
- Write a hook: on-screen text in the first seconds that creates curiosity rather than stating a flat fact.
- Add music only if it fits the topic.
- Post with a title and caption written for the platform, and submit the link straight away if the clip is for a campaign.
How long should a podcast clip be?
Most clips run 30 to 60 seconds. One clipper who studied campaign leaderboards found “the top earners in almost every campaign I was in were averaging 35 to 45 seconds,” against his own 55 to 60. Let the moment set the length: end when the payoff lands.
How many clips per episode?
An hour-long conversation usually holds five to ten moments that stand on their own; one retainer pitch describes “cutting 5 to 7 key moments” per weekly episode. Tools can suggest many more, but expect to discard some. One clipper using an AI tool reported 43 suggestions, of which about 35 were usable and roughly 12 were strong.
Editing is not the hard part
An agency owner said a clip that reached 33 million views was “probably edited in KineMaster or CapCut — on a mobile phone,” and that beginners wrongly think “editing is the most important part in clipping… It’s not. You don’t need fancy effects.” Choosing the moment matters more.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the best length for a podcast clip?
- 30 to 60 seconds for most platforms. Clippers who study campaign leaderboards report that top-earning clips often average 35 to 45 seconds. End the clip when the payoff lands, not at a fixed time.
- What aspect ratio should podcast clips be?
- Vertical 9:16, usually exported at 1080×1920, for TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels. Keep the speaker’s face and the captions clear of the on-screen buttons.
- Can I clip someone else’s podcast?
- Only with permission, for example as part of a clipping campaign the podcast runs or as a paid editor for the show. Clipping without permission risks copyright claims and falls foul of YouTube’s reused-content rules.
- How do I clip part of a podcast on my phone?
- Download the episode video, open it in a mobile editor, trim to the moment, set the canvas to 9:16, add auto-captions and a hook, and export. It works; most of the time goes into finding the moment, not the editing.
Where CLPX fits
This is the workflow CLPX automates. Paste a YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, X or Facebook link, or upload the episode file; links from other hosts such as Vimeo, Twitch, Google Drive or Dropbox are not supported, so download and upload the file instead. CLPX transcribes the episode, picks five to ten moments that stand on their own and says why each was chosen, snaps every cut to complete sentences, frames 9:16 on the active speaker using lip movement and audio together, and adds word-timed captions in one of six styles and twelve colour palettes, in 27 languages.
You watch each clip with live captions before it renders, approve it, and publish or schedule it to TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, X, Threads, Facebook and Pinterest. An hour-long recording usually has a full set of clips within about fifteen minutes.
Your first run on a new workspace is free: add one recording and watch every clip it makes in the browser. Downloading and publishing need a plan. See what CLPX does.
